Erdogan changed the name of Turkey, now the country will be known by this new name
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has renamed his
country Turkey. Now Turkey will be known as Turkiye. Earlier this month,
President Erdogan issued a statement saying that he had changed the country's
internationally recognized name from Turkey to Turkiye. He also pointed out
that the word Turkiye best reflects and expresses the culture, civilization and
values of the Turkish nation. Now Turkey will be used instead of Turkey for
all types of trade, international institutions and diplomatic functions.
In Turkish language, Turkey is called Turkiye. After its
independence from Western occupation in 1923, Turkey came to be known as
Turkiye. For centuries, Europeans addressed this country first by the name of
Ottoman State and then Turkiye, but the name that remained the most discussed
was Turkia in Latin. Later it changed to Turkish and this was made the official
name. If someone types Turkish in Google, he will get a messy set of
definitions of images, articles and dictionary. It will also feature a giant
bird called the turkey, which is used to make many staple dishes during
Christmas or Thanksgiving in North America. People say that the world sees them
and their unique identity because of the name. This is why many countries,
states and cities have changed their names in recent years.
Let us tell you that recently, the Netherlands removed the
name "Holland" to ease its image in the world. Prior to that,
"Macedonia" had changed the name to North Macedonia due to a
political dispute with Greece. In 1935, Iran changed its name from Persia. The
word Persia was used in Western countries. Iran means Persian in Persian. At
that time it was felt that the country should be called by a locally used name
and not a name known to outsiders.
